Here’s a little programming horror story for everyone:

I’m working on what I’m calling a “gibberish engine”. Its sole purpose is to produce a chunk of readable but meaningless text. Think lorem ipsum, but with some extra flair.

In order to make this work, I’m borrowing some concepts from language learning models.

The horror comes from the fact that I’m currently programming it using PHP.

Additionally, the program uses a dictionary created from digesting a source corpus. The dictionary file is also a PHP script. The best one so far is 40MB.

I’m going to be working on optimizing the way the dictionary is stored later today, but for now bask in the nightmare that is a 40MB PHP source file.
